How to Set Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in Webmail

How to Set Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

  1. Before you start, you will need to have a secondary e-mail address (such as a Gmail or Hotmail or Comcast account) to get the verification code for activating and using Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).  Enter that alternate or "recovery" e-mail address into your account settings in webmail.

  2. Log into your e-mail account using the webmail interface.   https://mail.yourdomain.com will take you to the webmail login screen.

  3. Once you have logged into your account, click the "More: Settings" button from the top menu. (This menu is "context sensitive" so it may display a different link.  In that case, click the drop-down arrow and select "Settings".  It may already show "Settings" in the top menu; in that case, you're already on the "Settings" screen, click "Account" in the menu in the left pane.)

  4. Scroll down to the Two-Factor Authentication card/box.  Click the "Enable" button.

  5. Choose verification method.  There are only two methods: "Recovery Email" and "Google Authenticator".  Google Authenticator is easier and faster. Choose Recovery Email unless you have Google Authenticator.   The system will require you enter a recovery email address and confirm it.  Click "Next".

  6. The system will e-mail a verification code to your recovery e-mail address.  Copy and paste that code into the "Verification Code" field:

    Click the "Check" button.

  7. Two-Step Authentication is now enabled.

When logging in using webmail, use your normal password.

With two-factor authentication enabled, your normal e-mail password will not work in Outlook or e-mail apps.  For e-mail apps or programs other than Outlook, click the "View" button (the "eye" icon) for "IMAP/POP/SMTP" to view the "application password".  Copy that password and paste it into your e-mail app/program.

When connecting to your e-mail account using Outlook, click the "View" button (the "eye" icon) for "" to view the "application password".  Copy that password and paste it into your e-mail app/program.
